Since the early days of humanity people have been fascinated by the mysteries of the universe and the possibility of life on other planets. Space opera movies such as Star Wars, Star Trek and Avatar are immensely popular and Star Wars is one of the highest grossing films of all time.

The hypothesis of the existence of alien life in the universe has been circulating for a long time. Respected scientists, such as Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan (but also influential historic personalities such as Winston Churchill) consider(ed) it improbable for life not to exist somewhere other than Earth(1)(2). This theory is not a recent one. In the 15th century, Copernicus expressed the view, known as the Copernican principle, that neither the Sun nor the Earth occupy a central, specially favored position in the universe. More recently, NASA and others have published about the existence of planets that could resemble Earth(3).
